Finasteride ( Proscar ) is prescribed to help reduce the size of the prostate gland in men. Men over 50 years often suffer from a benign enlargement of the prostate. This causes various urinary problems such as difficulties urinating, weak flow of urine, need to pass urine more often. By reducing the size of the prostate, Finasteride relieves most of these problems. In addition Finasteride can also be used to treat certain types of male hair loss. It cannot be used by women.

Up to this date there is no generic version of Merck’s Proscar ( Finasteride ), but they have given Dr. Reddy’s exclusive rights for an authorized generic.
